Martin County is a beautiful coastal county in southeastern Florida, home to 158,431 residents as of the 2020 census. Its county seat is Stuart, a charming city known for its waterfront views and vibrant community. The county is part of the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Established in 1925, Martin County was formed from portions of St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties. It was named after John W. Martin, who served as Florida’s governor from 1925 to 1929.
When the county was created, its western border followed the shoreline of Lake Okeechobee, much like neighboring Glades, Okeechobee, and Hendry counties. At the time, Palm Beach County had claimed the entire surface of the lake to secure a larger share of state and federal highway funds. Martin County’s state representative, William Ralph Scott of Stuart, introduced a bill to fairly divide the lake among its bordering counties, ensuring a more balanced distribution of road funding. While most counties agreed to the change, Palm Beach County resisted. In response, its representatives humorously presented Scott with a jug of water, symbolizing "all the water Bill Scott left Palm Beach County." That jug remains preserved at Stuart Heritage as a reminder of the county’s early history.
Today, Martin County continues to thrive, offering a mix of coastal charm, rich history, and a strong sense of community.
