Welcome to Broward County

Broward County is a bustling part of South Florida, located within the Miami metropolitan area. With nearly 2 million residents as of the 2020 census, it is the second-most populous county in Florida, following Miami-Dade. Fort Lauderdale, the county seat, is the largest city, home to over 180,000 people. Broward is known for its diversity, economic strength, and rich history.

Broward County's earliest inhabitants date back over 12,000 years, with the Tequesta people occupying the area when Europeans first arrived. The Tequesta were skilled hunters and gatherers, and they are credited with creating the Miami Circle.

The county was officially established on April 30, 1915, named after Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, who championed Everglades drainage projects. Initially, the land was used for agriculture, but over time, urban development transformed the area into what it is today. Fort Lauderdale, incorporated in 1911, was one of the first cities in the county, and the region quickly became a hub for tourism and real estate growth.

The county experienced a surge in development throughout the 20th century. The first tourist hotel in Fort Lauderdale opened in 1919, and by 1980, Broward’s population exceeded 1 million. Infrastructure improvements, such as the completion of Interstate 95 in 1976, helped fuel expansion.

Covering 1,323 square miles, Broward County is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Everglades to the west. With an average elevation of just six feet above sea level, the area is geologically young, primarily composed of limestone. Due to limited developable land, Broward has a high population density of about 3,740 people per square mile.

As of 2022, Broward County boasts a GDP of $124.8 billion, making it the second-largest economy in Florida and among the top 25 in the U.S. The area thrives on tourism, real estate, and business, making it an attractive place for both residents and investors.

From its ancient roots to its modern skyline, Broward County is a dynamic and evolving part of Florida, offering a mix of history, culture, and economic opportunity.
